Fact of the Day: The unicorn of the sea

Did you know the 14-foot-long narwhal has a tooth that can reach up to eight feet long!?

The narwhal has been called the ‘unicorn of the sea’. This pale-colored fully-aquatic marine mammal can be found in Arctic coastal waters and rivers. These legendary animals have two teeth. In males, the more prominent tooth grows into a spiral tusk that looks like a sword, which can grow up to 8.8 feet long. The ivory tusk tooth grows right through his upper lip. Scientists aren’t really sure what they use it for, but some believe it is important to find a mate (used to impress females or to battle rivals). Females sometimes grow a small tusk of their own, but it does not become as huge as the male’s.
